Why did my reach drop? A step-by-step check

Before blaming the algorithm or AI, work through seven causes in order, from a broken connection to copied content.

Reach drops feel mysterious, but most have an ordinary cause. Work down this list in order. The first items are the quickest to check and the most common.

1. Are your posts actually going out?

A disconnected account means scheduled posts fail and nothing appears. Platforms expire connections on their own schedule. Check your connections and failed posts first (fix a disconnected account, when a post fails).

2. Did you post less?

Fewer posts means fewer chances to be shown. In Buffer's analysis of 2.1 million Instagram posts, accounts posting 3–5 times a week got about 12% more reach per post than those posting once or twice (Buffer, vendor data). A two-week gap is the most common hidden cause.

3. Did you stop replying?

Comments and replies feed ranking on Instagram, Facebook and Threads (Instagram, Meta). If your replies dropped off, your reach can follow. See do replies boost reach?

4. Is the content original?

Reposts, watermarked videos from other apps and lightly edited copies get recommended less (Instagram, Meta, 2026).

5. Are your captions spammy?

Long, hashtag-stuffed captions that don't match the post are on Facebook's list of spam tactics (Meta). A few relevant tags beat thirty.

6. Did your timing or format shift?

Posting at hours your audience is asleep, or switching from video to images, can change reach. Compare like with like before you draw conclusions.

7. Is it a seasonal dip?

Holidays and slow seasons move whole audiences. Compare with the same weeks last year, not last month.

Is it the AI?

Unlikely. None of the major platforms says AI-written text gets less reach. What they punish is copied, mass-produced or spammy content, whoever wrote it (the full breakdown).

Fix it in a week

  • Reconnect anything broken and reschedule failed posts.
  • Plan 3–5 original posts for the week at your best times.
  • Reply to every comment within a day.
  • Trim hashtags to a handful that fit the post.

Frequently asked questions

Is my account shadowbanned?

Usually not. Check for broken connections, posting gaps, fewer replies and reposted content first. These explain most drops.

How long does it take reach to recover?

It varies by platform and account. Most see movement within a few weeks of posting consistently and replying again.
