AI and reach

Do replies boost reach? What the platforms say about conversations

Comments and replies show up in the ranking explainers of Instagram, Facebook, Threads, TikTok and X. Here's what that means for how fast you answer.

Short answer: yes, conversations are a ranking signal on most networks, and the data shows posts where creators reply do better. Nobody can promise a fixed boost, but answering comments is one of the few things that both helps reach and wins customers.

What the platforms say

  • Instagram: ranking uses how quickly people like, comment, share and save a post, and whether you comment on each other's posts (Instagram).
  • Facebook: the average length of comments on a post and how relevant they are to its topic are both listed signals (Meta).
  • Threads: the feed predicts how likely you are to reply, and counts replies to replies too (Meta).
  • TikTok: recommendations use your interactions, including the comments you post (TikTok).
  • X: the For You timeline learns from your likes, reposts and replies (X).

What the data shows

Buffer compared around 2 million posts, each account against itself. Posts where the creator replied to comments had higher engagement: +42% on Threads, +30% on LinkedIn, +21% on Instagram and +9% on Facebook (Buffer, 2025, vendor data). It's a correlation: posts that are already doing well attract more replies. Even so, it points one way.

Why speed matters more than the algorithm

  • About three-quarters of people expect a brand to reply on social within 24 hours, and 73% say they'll buy from a competitor if a brand doesn't respond (Sprout Social Index 2025, vendor data).
  • In a classic study of 1.25 million leads, companies that replied within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to reach a real conversation as those that replied an hour later (HBR, 2011).

A comment asking a price is a customer halfway through the door. The reach is a bonus.

A reply routine that works

  • Answer buying questions first: price, availability, delivery, bookings.
  • Reply in public with a short, useful answer, then move details to DMs.
  • Ask a question back when it fits. It keeps the thread going.
  • Don't paste the same reply under every comment. LinkedIn counts repetitive comments as spam, and people notice.
  • Clear the queue at set times: morning, lunch and late afternoon.
