You are storing a lossily compressed picture in a lossless container. The PNG can easily be several times the size of the WebP, and that is normal rather than a sign anything went wrong.
WebP to PNG converter
Turn a WebP you were handed into something every editor will open — losslessly, with the transparency intact.
- Free, no signup
- Runs in your browser
- Nothing uploaded
- If the WebP is animated, this captures the first frame only — canvas has no access to the rest of the sequence.
- PNG is lossless, so there is no quality dial here.
When WebP to PNG is the right move
WebP arrives constantly now: you save an image from a site and get a .webp you cannot open. Browsers decode it universally, but older Photoshop releases, plenty of print workflows, most Office versions and a long tail of desktop utilities simply reject the extension. PNG is the universally accepted lossless landing spot, and unlike JPEG it keeps the alpha channel the WebP may be carrying.

It is worth being clear about what this does and does not do. If the WebP was saved lossily — most are — the PNG is a faithful, lossless copy of a lossy image. Nothing is recovered. What you get is a file that opens everywhere and stops degrading from here.
- An editor or upload form will not accept .webp.
- You need the transparency preserved, which rules out JPEG.
- The image is about to be edited and you want no further loss.
What you gain and lose going WebP to PNG
PNG and WebP both carry 8-bit alpha, so this direction is a clean handoff — soft edges and shadows survive with no fill colour and no fringing.
Whatever the WebP encoder discarded stays discarded. PNG preserves what it is given, exactly, at a larger size.
Converting WebP to PNG, step by step
1Choose your WebP file
Browse or drop it onto the panel. Up to 25 MB. The file is decoded by your browser and is never uploaded anywhere.
2PNG is already selected
The target is preset to PNG for this conversion. Only formats your browser can genuinely encode are offered, so nothing hands you a renamed PNG.
3Nothing to tune
PNG is lossless, so there is no quality dial and no background to choose. What your browser decoded is exactly what gets written.
4Compare, then download
Original size, converted size and the percentage difference are all shown before you commit — including the cases where converting makes the file bigger.
WebP to PNG questions
Pick a question to see the answer.
WebP support arrived in browsers years before it arrived in desktop applications. Photoshop only added it natively in 2022, and many print, office and utility tools still have not. Converting to PNG sidesteps the whole question.
Yes. Both formats store a full 8-bit alpha channel, so a WebP with soft transparent edges converts to a PNG with the same soft transparent edges. Nothing is flattened onto a background.
Only the first frame is captured. The conversion runs on a canvas, which holds a single still image, so an animated WebP produces one static PNG. Converting the full animation needs a dedicated transcoder such as ffmpeg.
