AVIF at a given quality can be half the size of a comparable WebP and a fraction of a PNG. Converting to PNG can multiply the size by five or ten. That is the cost of universal compatibility.
AVIF to PNG converter
Open an AVIF in software that has never heard of it — losslessly, with the transparency preserved.
- Free, no signup
- Runs in your browser
- Nothing uploaded
- AVIF decoding requires a reasonably current browser. If yours cannot read the file you will see a decode error rather than a silently wrong output.
- There is no AVIF output anywhere on this site, because browsers can decode AVIF but cannot encode it from a canvas.
When AVIF to PNG is the right move
AVIF is the newest of the mainstream web formats and comfortably the best compressor of them, which is why sites have started serving it. It is also the one your desktop tools are most likely to reject outright. Browsers, on the other hand, decode it happily — and that mismatch is precisely what makes a browser-based converter the right tool here. The decoding your image editor cannot do, the browser does for free.

PNG is the safest destination. It is lossless, it keeps AVIF's alpha channel, and there is no software still in use that cannot open it. The file will grow considerably, because you are moving from the most efficient format available to one of the least, but nothing about the picture changes.
- You saved an image from a site and nothing on your machine will open it.
- The image has transparency you need to keep.
- The file is going into an editor and you want no further loss.
What you gain and lose going AVIF to PNG
Both formats store a full alpha channel, so soft edges survive with no fill colour and no fringing.
AVIF decoding arrived in Chrome and Firefox around 2021 and Safari 16.4 in 2023. On an older browser the file simply will not decode, and you will get a clear error rather than a wrong result.
Converting AVIF to PNG, step by step
1Choose your AVIF file
Browse or drop it onto the panel. Up to 25 MB. The file is decoded by your browser and is never uploaded anywhere.
2PNG is already selected
The target is preset to PNG for this conversion. Only formats your browser can genuinely encode are offered, so nothing hands you a renamed PNG.
3Nothing to tune
PNG is lossless, so there is no quality dial and no background to choose. What your browser decoded is exactly what gets written.
4Compare, then download
Original size, converted size and the percentage difference are all shown before you commit — including the cases where converting makes the file bigger.

Because no shipping browser implements an AVIF encoder for canvas. Ask a canvas for AVIF and it silently hands back a PNG with the wrong extension on it. Rather than ship that, the tool probes what your browser genuinely encodes and offers only those formats.
Almost certainly, and often by five to ten times. AVIF is the most efficient of the common formats and PNG is lossless, so the gap is wide. You are converting for compatibility, never for size.
Yes. AVIF and PNG both store a full 8-bit alpha channel, so nothing is flattened onto a background and soft edges stay soft.
