AVIF to WebP converter

Still a modern format, still small — but with several more years of software support behind it.

  • Free, no signup
  • Runs in your browser
  • Nothing uploaded
  • Transparency is preserved — both formats have a real alpha channel, so nothing is filled in.
  • AVIF decoding requires a reasonably current browser; an older one reports a decode error rather than a wrong file.

Why this conversion

When AVIF to WebP is the right move

This is the compromise conversion. AVIF is the more efficient format, but WebP has been decodable everywhere since 2020 while AVIF only became universally readable in 2023, and desktop software follows browsers by years. Converting to WebP keeps most of the size advantage while widening the set of things that will open the file.

It also keeps everything structurally important. WebP carries a full alpha channel, so transparency survives without a fill colour, and its lossy mode is close enough in character to AVIF's that a second pass at a sensible quality setting is hard to spot.

Reach for it when
  • You need broader support than AVIF has, but do not want to fall back to JPEG.
  • The image has transparency that must survive.
  • The file is for the web, where WebP is fully at home.
The trade-off

What you gain and lose going AVIF to WebP

Some efficiency is given back

At matched visual quality WebP typically lands 20 to 30 percent larger than AVIF. That is the price of the extra few years of support.

Transparency survives

Both formats store 8-bit alpha, so there is no fill colour to choose and no fringing on soft edges.

Two lossy passes, but well matched

Both encoders are modern and make similar kinds of decision about what to discard, so a second pass at high quality tends to be inconspicuous.

How it works

Converting AVIF to WebP, step by step

  1. 1

    Choose your AVIF file

Browse or drop it onto the panel. Up to 25 MB. The file is decoded by your browser and is never uploaded anywhere.

  2. 2

    WebP is already selected

The target is preset to WebP for this conversion. Only formats your browser can genuinely encode are offered, so nothing hands you a renamed PNG.

  3. 3

    Set the quality

WebP is lossy here. Around 80 percent is the usual sweet spot — most of the size saving, none of the visible mush.

  4. 4

    Compare, then download

Original size, converted size and the percentage difference are all shown before you commit — including the cases where converting makes the file bigger.

AVIF to WebP questions

Pick a question to see the answer.

  • Yes, for reach. AVIF compresses better, but WebP has had universal browser support since 2020 and much wider desktop tooling. Sites commonly serve AVIF with a WebP fallback for exactly this reason.

  • Around 20 to 30 percent at comparable visual quality. It is the smallest penalty of any conversion away from AVIF — JPEG and especially PNG cost far more.

  • A little, as any re-encode does. Both are modern encoders that discard broadly similar information, so at a quality of 85 percent or above the second pass is difficult to see even side by side.
