Keep the transparency, drop most of the bytes. The PNG is decoded and re-encoded inside this tab and never leaves your machine.

Transparency is preserved. WebP has a real alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent and no fill colour is needed.

Why this conversion
When PNG to WebP is the right move
PNG stores every pixel exactly as it was drawn, which is why it is the right home for screenshots, UI exports and logos with hard edges. It is also why a full-page screenshot routinely lands at two or three megabytes — lossless compression has nowhere to hide detail it is not permitted to discard.

WebP is the format that fixed that for the web. It keeps the alpha channel PNG is prized for, but adds a lossy mode, so the same screenshot typically comes out 60 to 80 percent smaller with nothing you would notice at normal viewing size. Every browser in current use has decoded WebP since 2020, so the compatibility argument that used to hold this conversion back has expired.
Reach for it when
A page is slow and images are the bulk of its weight.
You need transparency, so JPEG is not on the table.
The source is a photo, a gradient or a busy screenshot — the content where lossless compression buys you least.
The trade-off
What you gain and lose going PNG to WebP
You give up the pixel-exact guarantee
WebP here is lossy, so the encoder is allowed to approximate. At the default quality that is invisible on photographic content, but a screenshot of small text is the one case where it can smear.

Transparency survives intact
WebP carries a full 8-bit alpha channel, the same as PNG, so soft shadows and rounded corners come through unchanged. There is no background colour to choose, because nothing needs filling in.
Flat graphics may not shrink at all
A logo made of four flat colours is already tiny as a PNG — palette compression is extremely good at exactly that. Convert it anyway and WebP can come out larger. The size comparison below tells you before you download.
How it works
Converting PNG to WebP, step by step
1
Choose your PNG file
Browse or drop it onto the panel. Up to 25 MB. The file is decoded by your browser and is never uploaded anywhere.
2
WebP is already selected
The target is preset to WebP for this conversion. Only formats your browser can genuinely encode are offered, so nothing hands you a renamed PNG.
3
Set the quality
WebP is lossy here. Around 80 percent is the usual sweet spot — most of the size saving, none of the visible mush.
4
Compare, then download
Original size, converted size and the percentage difference are all shown before you commit — including the cases where converting makes the file bigger.
PNG to WebP questions
Pick a question to see the answer.
Yes — 8-bit alpha, the same as PNG, so soft gradients in the transparency survive rather than collapsing to hard edges. That is the main reason PNG to WebP is a safe swap where PNG to JPEG is not.
No. Photographic and screenshot content usually shrinks a great deal; flat-colour graphics with few distinct colours sometimes grow, because PNG's palette compression is very strong on that kind of image. This page shows both sizes before you download, so you can simply check.
Yes. Every browser released since 2020 decodes it, Safari included from version 14. Email clients are the remaining gap — for an HTML email, PNG or JPEG is still the safer attachment.
