PNG is lossless, so it has to encode the JPEG's compression artefacts as faithfully as the picture itself. A PNG three to five times the size of the JPEG it came from is entirely normal.
JPEG to PNG converter
Get a lossless copy you can crop, annotate and re-save repeatedly without the quality sliding a little further each time.
- Free, no signup
- Runs in your browser
- Nothing uploaded
- PNG is lossless, so there is no quality dial for this conversion — the output is a pixel-exact copy of what your browser decoded.
When JPEG to PNG is the right move
Converting a JPEG to PNG restores nothing. The detail JPEG discarded the first time it was saved is gone, and PNG cannot invent it back. What PNG gives you is a stopping point: from here on every save is lossless, so you can crop, annotate and export a dozen times without the generation loss that eats a JPEG a little more on each round trip.

The second reason is the alpha channel. The converted PNG is fully opaque, but it can now hold transparency — so if the next step is knocking out a background in an editor, PNG is the format that can actually store the result. JPEG never could.
- The file is about to be edited and re-saved several times.
- You need to cut out a background and keep it transparent.
- A tool or spec demands a lossless format.
What you gain and lose going JPEG to PNG
No converter can undo JPEG compression. If the source is soft or blocky, the PNG will be soft or blocky at a larger file size. Anything advertising otherwise is upscaling and guessing.
The block edges and ringing that JPEG introduced become permanent, exactly reproduced pixels in the PNG. That is fine for editing, but it means the PNG is not a clean master — it is a faithful copy of a lossy one.
Converting JPEG to PNG, step by step
1Choose your JPEG file
Browse or drop it onto the panel. Up to 25 MB. The file is decoded by your browser and is never uploaded anywhere.
2PNG is already selected
The target is preset to PNG for this conversion. Only formats your browser can genuinely encode are offered, so nothing hands you a renamed PNG.
3Nothing to tune
PNG is lossless, so there is no quality dial and no background to choose. What your browser decoded is exactly what gets written.
4Compare, then download
Original size, converted size and the percentage difference are all shown before you commit — including the cases where converting makes the file bigger.
JPEG to PNG questions
Pick a question to see the answer.
No. PNG is lossless, which means it preserves exactly what it is given — including every artefact the JPEG already contains. The benefit is that nothing degrades from this point onward, not that anything is repaired.
Because lossless compression cannot throw anything away, and it must also encode the JPEG's own compression noise, which is high-frequency detail that compresses badly. Three to five times the original size is typical.
It gains the ability to store it. Every pixel is opaque after conversion, but the alpha channel now exists, so an editor can knock out a background and save the result without changing format again.
