WebP here is lossy, unlike BMP to PNG. The saving is larger and the picture is an approximation — usually an indistinguishable one at sensible quality settings.

- WebP is lossy at these settings while BMP is lossless — for a pixel-exact result, convert to PNG instead.
When BMP to WebP is the right move
BMP is not a web format in any practical sense. Browsers can decode it, but nobody serves it, and for good reason: the files are enormous and the format offers nothing a page needs. WebP is the exact opposite — designed for delivery, compact, and understood by every browser in current use.

Because WebP has both a lossy and a lossless mode, it can suit whatever the bitmap contains. Photographic content compresses hardest in lossy mode and the saving over BMP is close to absurd. For flat, sharp-edged content the choice between this and BMP to PNG is genuinely close, and the size comparison below will settle it for your specific file better than any rule of thumb.
- The bitmap is destined for a web page or an app.
- You want the smallest sensible file and a small amount of loss is acceptable.
- The image has photographic detail, where WebP pulls furthest ahead of PNG.
What you gain and lose going BMP to WebP
WebP is excellent on the web and still awkward off it. If the file is going to a print shop, an older editor or an email, JPEG or PNG will cause fewer arguments.
WebP stores transparency; most BMPs are fully opaque, so in practice there is nothing to preserve and no fill colour to pick.
Converting BMP to WebP, step by step
1Choose your BMP file
Browse or drop it onto the panel. Up to 25 MB. The file is decoded by your browser and is never uploaded anywhere.
2WebP is already selected
The target is preset to WebP for this conversion. Only formats your browser can genuinely encode are offered, so nothing hands you a renamed PNG.
3Set the quality
WebP is lossy here. Around 80 percent is the usual sweet spot — most of the size saving, none of the visible mush.
4Compare, then download
Original size, converted size and the percentage difference are all shown before you commit — including the cases where converting makes the file bigger.
BMP to WebP questions

WebP for photographic content, where its lossy mode pulls far ahead. PNG when you need the pixels preserved exactly, or when the image is flat-colour art where lossless compression is already very efficient. The size figures below are the fastest way to decide for one specific file.
Very substantially — bitmaps carry no compression at all, so almost the entire file is redundancy. Reductions of one to two orders of magnitude are normal.
In a browser, always. In desktop software, sometimes — support arrived late and is still patchy in older tools. Convert to PNG or JPEG instead if the file is leaving the web.
