GIF to JPEG converter

A still frame from a GIF, encoded as a JPEG small enough to attach anywhere — with the transparency flattened onto a colour you choose.

  • Free, no signup
  • Runs in your browser
  • Nothing uploaded
  • Animated GIFs are captured as a single still frame — the first one.
  • JPEG cannot store transparency. Transparent pixels are painted with the fill colour below.
  • If the GIF is flat-colour art rather than a photo, PNG will almost certainly look better than JPEG here.

Why this conversion

When GIF to JPEG is the right move

Two things happen in this conversion, and both are worth knowing before you run it. The animation collapses to a single still frame, and the transparency is flattened onto a solid colour, because JPEG stores neither. What you get back is a small, ordinary image file that every piece of software on earth will open.

Be aware that JPEG is often the wrong destination for GIF content. Most GIFs are flat-colour graphics, screen recordings or line art with hard edges — precisely the material JPEG's block-based compression handles worst, leaving visible ringing around every edge. If the GIF is not photographic, converting it to PNG will look better and may well produce a smaller file too.

Reach for it when
  • The GIF is photographic or heavily dithered, where JPEG's compression fits.
  • Something downstream accepts JPEG and nothing else.
  • A hard file-size limit matters more than edge sharpness.
The trade-off

What you gain and lose going GIF to JPEG

First frame only

A canvas holds one still image, so however many frames the GIF has, one comes out. The rest are never decoded.

Hard edges are JPEG's weak point

GIF art tends to be flat colour with sharp boundaries, which is what JPEG compresses worst. Expect halos around text and edges unless you push the quality dial well up.

Transparency becomes a solid colour

GIF transparency is all-or-nothing, so flattening it is at least predictable — but it is permanent. Pick a fill that matches wherever the image will end up.

How it works

Converting GIF to JPEG, step by step

  1. 1

    Choose your GIF file

Browse or drop it onto the panel. Up to 25 MB. The file is decoded by your browser and is never uploaded anywhere.

  2. 2

    JPEG is already selected

The target is preset to JPEG for this conversion. Only formats your browser can genuinely encode are offered, so nothing hands you a renamed PNG.

  3. 3

    Set quality and background

JPEG is lossy and cannot store transparency, so the dial trades size against detail and the colour picker decides what fills any transparent areas.

  4. 4

    Compare, then download

Original size, converted size and the percentage difference are all shown before you commit — including the cases where converting makes the file bigger.

GIF to JPEG questions

Pick a question to see the answer.

  • PNG for flat-colour graphics, line art, logos and screen recordings — which is most GIFs. JPEG only when the frame is genuinely photographic. JPEG's block compression leaves visible artefacts around the hard edges that GIF content is full of.

  • Not through a canvas-based converter. Only the first frame is decoded. An animated result needs a real transcoder such as ffmpeg, which reads and re-encodes the whole frame sequence.

  • JPEG has no alpha channel at all, so every pixel must be opaque. The transparent pixels are composited onto the fill colour you choose before encoding — white by default, rather than the black most tools produce silently.
